Flexible Contextualism about Deontic Modals: A Puzzle about Information-Sensitivity

چکیده
According to a recent challenge to Kratzer’s canonical contextualist semantics for deontic modal expressions, no contextualist view can make sense of cases in which such a modal must be information-sensitive in some way. Here I show howKratzer’s semantics is compatible with readings of the targeted sentences that fit with the data. I then outline a general account of how contexts select parameter values for modal expressions and show, in terms of that account, how the needed, contextualist-friendly readings might plausibly get selected in the challenge cases.

Deontic Conditionals: Weak and Strong*
Discussions of the Miners Puzzle have prompted renewed interest in how deontic modals can be sensitive to relevant information. Linguistic phenomena involving information-sensitivity have beenused tomotivate general claims about the interpretation of modals and conditionals. These generalizations have been premature. Theorists have focused on a limited range of cases. Nearly all examples use we...
متن کاملWhat we know and what to do
This paper discusses an important puzzle about the semantics of indicative conditionals and deontic necessity modals (should, ought, etc.): the Miner Puzzle (Parfit, ms; Kolodny and MacFarlane, J Philos 107:115–143, 2010). Rejecting modus ponens for the indicative conditional, as others have proposed, seems to solve a version of the puzzle, but is actually orthogonal to the puzzle itself. In fa...
متن کاملDynamic Thoughts on Ifs and Oughts
Iffy oughts figure prominently in a variety of paradoxes of deontic logic. A satisfying response to these paradoxes is a non-negotiable component of any adequate semantic story about conditionals and deontic modals. I demonstrate that such a story can be told but doing so requires that we supplement a semantics that pays proper attention to the sensitivity of ifs and oughts to contextual inform...
متن کاملDeontic and Epistemic Modals in Suppositional [Inquisitive] Semantics∗
In Groenendijk and Roelofsen (2015) a suppositional semantics for implication is proposed within the general framework of inquisitive semantics. Our aim is to extend this semantic approach to epistemic and deontic modals, but, for the purposes of this short paper, we bracketed off inquisitive aspects of meaning. To illustrate the semantics we discuss a semantic solution to a Jackson inspired pu...
متن کاملEvidence Sensitivity in Weak Necessity Deontic Modals
Kolodny and MacFarlane () have made a pioneering contribution to our understanding of how the interpretation of deontic modals can be sensitive to evidence and information. But integrating the discussion of informationsensitivity into the standard Kratzerian framework for modals suggests ways of capturing the relevant data without treating deontic modals as “informational modals” in their s...
